Community Emergency Response Team Training
Fall Classes Begin September 14th – Check Back, Registration Opens in July!
CERTs are formed by members of a neighborhood or workplace, who want to be better prepared for the hazards that threaten their communities.
Initially, CERT programs were developed to assist communities in taking care of themselves in the aftermath of a major disaster when first responders are overwhelmed or unable to respond because of communication or transportation difficulties. As the CERT concept has taken hold across the country, however, CERTs have become much more than originally envisioned. CERTs have proven themselves to be an active and vital part of their communities' preparedness and response capability.
CERT classes are held over an 8 week period, and are held on Tuesday nights with a culminating exercise to be determined. Classes will be held at Fire Station #82, 1851 228th Ave NE. The cost is $35.00 and the classes will begin at 6:30 pm. Classes are 2 ½ hours each week for a total of 20 hours. Teachers can apply for 20 clock hours and Students can receive 20 community service hours. Classes missed can be made up for complete credit.
These are the topics that you’ll learn about in the CERT course:
| | | Course Overview and Disaster Preparedness |
| | | Incident Command/Communications |
| | | Disaster Psychology/Terrorism |
| | | Fire Suppression |
| | | Light Search & Rescue |
| | | Disaster Medical – Triage |
| | | Disaster Medical – Treatment |
| | | Final Drill |
When deployed appropriately, CERTs can complement and enhance first-response capability in neighborhoods and workplaces by ensuring the safety of themselves and their families working outward to the neighborhood or office and beyond until first responders arrive. CERTs can then assist first-response personnel as directed.
